Director of Facilities
This is a twelve-month full-time exempt position.
POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the President, the Director of Facilities is responsible for the care and maintenance of our school’s physical plant. The Director should have a background in managing operational and capital expenses and a working knowledge in the fields of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, custodial care, and related infrastructure consistent with a school. This role includes oversight, scheduling and staffing the facilities, transportation, and housekeeping. Critical tasks include management of maintenance requests, scheduling of preventative maintenance, and inspections of the physical plant to ensure continuous functioning and compliance.
Success in this role will require the ability to balance daily work requests, ad hoc event set-up requests, long-term projects, and unexpected emergencies. A strong working relationship with school leadership is critical, as well as building relationships with faculty, staff, and vendors. Evenings and weekends are often required to meet the needs of the school and community. This is a twelve-month full-time exempt position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Direct, supervise, develop, and evaluate facilities department personnel. Hire and supervise student summer workers. Establish and maintain a positive and productive working environment.
- Create and maintain department schedules to ensure adequate staffing and completion of all support requests.
- Oversee inventory for all general supplies and equipment needed for repairs and grounds.
- In partnership with the CFO, solicit bids, evaluate, and recommend outside contractors, including cleaning services, to ensure timely and accurate completion of tasks as well as compliance with contractual agreements, municipal codes, safety standards, and school policies and procedures.
- Conduct routine inspections of all campus facilities for maintenance and custodial needs, performing these with the CFO and President on a periodic basis. Schedule, implement, and manage preventative maintenance for all machinery and equipment, including all regular plant and equipment inspections.
- Collaborate with the Information Technology Department on projects.
- Repair, maintain, install, set up, and take down furniture and equipment for campus events, employee offices, classroom moves, etc.
- Drive a school-owned vehicle to various on-campus work sites and occasionally offsite, and maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in a safe operating condition.
- Assure compliance with federal and state building codes and health and safety standards.
- Manage large renovation and new building projects to be on time and within budget.
- Prepare information and reports to communicate the current status of budget, capital projects, and deferred maintenance for the Head of School, CFO, and Board of Trustees.
- Monitor the safety, functionality, and appearance of all campus grounds and facilities and implement corrective measures when warranted, including snow removal.
- Report and respond to employee calls for assistance during work hours; ensure problems are resolved quickly.
- Manage facilities and capital budgets.
- Maintain an adequate supply of tools, equipment, and supplies for making repairs.
- Oversee the school’s transportation program, including intercampus bussing, daily commuter bus services, and maintenance of vehicles.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the administration.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Possession of a valid Maryland driver's license.
- Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and work experience in related fields
- Minimum of ten years of experience managing facilities, preferably in an educational setting with extensive supervisory experience.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions in English.
- Basic knowledge of technology including sending and receiving email communications.
- Ability to work with and be part of a team.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
